How to become a Christian

If you spend any time in Christian circles or reading material online, you will have heard a number of phrases.

Be saved. Salvation. Saving faith. Accept Jesus. Follow Jesus. Invite Christ into your heart. Commit your life to Jesus. Pray to accept Christ. Become a Christian. How to get to heaven. How to have peace with God.

The reality is, there is no ‘right way’ or a prescribed way to come to faith. For some people it is an immediate reaction and others become Christians over a long period of time. Some become Christians at church or another big event, others alone. Some people will already have some understanding about the Christian faith whilst others will know very little or nothing.

Saying all of that, there is a reason why you might have clicked on this blog, so let me give you some guidance.

Firstly, if you are still unsure what to do, can I suggest that you come to church or come to our alpha course where you will learn more.

If though, you would like to become a Christian now, or knows whats involved, here are some steps. Moreover, I have also included some bible verses so you can read more into the steps or the reasons behind the comments.

STEP ONE

Recognise that you are loved by God and He wants to have a relationship with you.

(Romans 5:1, John 3:16, John 10:10)

STEP TWO

However, there is a problem. We all sin (sin means that we choose to not obey God), which makes it impossible for us to have a relationship with God because He is holy.

(Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23)

STEP THREE

The good news is, God made a way for us to be in relationship with Him. Not by us becoming sinless, but by Jesus dying on the cross for us. Or, to put it another way, Jesus chose to die for you and me in our place. There is nothing more that we need to do than accept that Jesus died for our sins.

(1 Timothy 2:5, 1 Peter 3:18)

STEP FOUR

Which leads to us making a choice, that you choose to accept that Jesus, the Son of God, died on a cross for you, or you choose to reject His sacrifice.
This can all be done in a simple prayer.

(John 1:12, Romans 10:9)

"Dear God, I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe that He died for my sin and that you raised Him to life. I want to trust Him as my Saviour and follow Him as Lord, from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen."

STEP FIVE

Welcome to the family! One thing that is important if we are going to grow as a Christian is to be part of a church. Of course, you are very welcome to come along to Moore Park Baptist Church, but if you live some distance away we may not be the best choice. If you need help finding a church please contact us at pastor@moorepark.org.au and we would be delighted to help you.

There is nothing more to it other than continuing to grow your relationship with Christ. This journey won’t be linear but it will be the greatest gift and experience you could possibly have.

2 CORINTHIANS 5:7

We walk by faith, not by sight.

We’d love for you to come and join us as we grow together as disciples of Christ and seek to serve our wider community.
